Houseplant Care: A Seasonal Guide

Discover how to care for houseplants year-round with our season-by-season guide. Learn watering, light, and temperature tips for each season.

Spring – The growing season

As days get longer and temperatures rise, plants wake up from their winter dormancy. Spring is a time of growth and rejuvenation for houseplants. As a houseplant parent, it’s probably the most exciting time of the year for houseplant care, but it can also be the most challenging if you don’t keep on top of things.

  • Watering: With increased light and temperature, watering should become more frequent. Monitor your plants and water when the top inch of soil feels dry.
  • Fertilizing: As plants start actively growing, start fertilizing with a balanced houseplant feed, following the instructions on the pack.
  • Repotting: If roots start to grow out of the bottom of the pot or growth seems stunted, it may be time to repot. Spring is the ideal time for this. Read our guide on repotting houseplants
  • Pruning and Trimming: Encourage new growth and help plants maintain an attractive shape with some well-timed pruning and trimming.

Summer – The flourishing season

In summer, your houseplants are in their element. With plenty of light and warmth, they should be at their most vibrant.

  • Watering: Plants will likely need more water due to higher temperatures and increased growth. Check soil moisture levels regularly.
  • Light: While plants enjoy the extra light, beware of hot, direct sun which can scorch leaves. Use blinds or move plants back from the window if necessary.
  • Humidity: Some tropical plants may appreciate extra humidity due to increased evaporation. Consider misting or using a humidity tray.
  • Pest Control: Summer is a prime time for pests. Regularly check your plants for signs of pests like spider mites and aphids, and treat any infestations promptly.

Autumn – The slowing season

As daylight hours decrease and temperatures drop, plants begin to slow down and prepare for winter dormancy.

  • Watering: Start reducing watering frequency as growth slows and temperatures cool.
  • Light: Move plants closer to windows to maximize exposure to the decreasing light, but keep them away from drafts.
  • Fertilizing: Stop fertilizing as plants won’t be able to use it while growth is slowed.
  • Adjusting Care: Remember the specific needs of your different houseplants. For instance, succulents may start their growth period and require more water.

Winter – The resting season

Winter is a period of rest for houseplants. Their growth significantly slows down or even stops.

  • Watering: Overwatering is a common cause of winter plant deaths. Water sparingly, only when the soil is dry.
  • Light: Make the most of the reduced daylight by keeping plants in well-lit areas, but out of cold drafts.
  • Temperature: Most houseplants prefer temperatures above 10°C (50°F). Keep them away from cold windows and doors, and out of the path of heaters.
  • Air Quality: With windows often shut in colder climates, houseplants can help to purify the air. Consider how your plants can best be positioned to maximize these benefits.

The key to successful houseplant care is observing your plants closely and responding to their needs. This season-by-season guide is just a starting point – your plants will tell you what they need with a little careful observation. If you need a little extra help, view our houseplant care guides.
